This is Part 4 of our series on Executive Presence. In Part 3 of this series, we discussed the need to stay current, as another critical element of Intellectual Impact (one of the two main components of Executive Presence).

If you haven’t already done so, it would be best to start with Part 1.

Picture Yourself…
So, picture yourself at a business meeting — after having implemented all we’ve discussed so far about Executive Presence:

you have engaged the action items in 10 Things Every Man Should Do, Every Day, and are packing a powerful Physical Impact — brimming with energy, fresh off of a workout, impeccably dressed, impeccably groomed.

you have some great literature under your belt, and the enhanced philosophical perspective that comes with it.

you are current; ‘on the draw’ with interesting stories and the occasional pop culture reference to help keep your conversations gliding along.

With these essentials in order, you hold an incredible amount of firepower — in fact, a dangerous amount, if not modulated correctly. There is a slippery downslope of having your ‘stuff’ together: it’s very easy to slip into a smug sense of yourself — albeit unknowingly.

Get the next 3 elements of Intellectual Impact right, however, and you’ll have nothing to worry about. On the one hand, you will see your comfort level soar in social and business settings. You will find yourself at ease in situations that perhaps unnerved you in the past.

On the other hand, you will be balanced and controlled in your communication style in a way that will draw people to you. You will be admired for your knowledge; your confidence; your authority — rather than resented.

To get there, you’ll need to be…

Outwardly Focused
One of the key advantages to being outwardly focused is that it relaxes you in situations that make most people nervous.

When you’re outwardly focused, there is no room in your mind for wondering what people’s impressions are of you… how you’re coming off… if you’re ‘presidential’ enough… whether they like you. Your mind has no time for these inward concerns, because it is completely focused on outcomes.

To illustrate: let’s say you’re arriving at a conference as a newly appointed member of the board of directors for a large pharmaceutical firm.

Standing around in the cocktail reception area there are groups of CEO’s, scientists and PhD’s (in groups of 2′s and 3′s), market strategists, lawyers and staff chatting quietly — a little laughter here and there… they seem to all know each other, but this is the first time most of them will be meeting you.

Here’s what inwardly focused thinking sounds like:

‘OK — this is it. Whatever you do, don’t screw up!’

‘I’ve got to think positively. I’m Great and everyone will love me!’

‘Really nervous. I hope I don’t start sweating too much.’

‘Heh. Why should I be nervous… I make more money than all of these guys.’

Here’s the same man, this time focused outwardly:

‘Glad to finally be here — it’ll be great to put some faces with some names.’

‘Let’s see, which one is Jim Porter… I want to be sure and talk to him about…’

‘Marketing director really seems to know her stuff. She might be a great resource for…’

When you’re outwardly focused, you rarely allow any of your thoughts to be about you. You are focused on results (Latin: effectus, you’ll recall).

High-stakes social settings like the above illustration tend to exacerbate our insecurities (we all have them). But when your outward focus is strong enough, you render yourself unconscious of any superficial concerns. All your mind has room for — is the work.

2 Steps to an Outwardly Focused Mindset

Before you arrive at any business gathering, set 1 to 3 solid goals you want to achieve by the end of the meeting (chat with a specific politician? make a strategic introduction? rally your VP’s behind a new initiative? …). This ensures that you have outcomes to concentrate on, rather than yourself.

Tune your radar for opportunities to assist others with their outcomes at the meeting, as well. Make a conscious effort to provide value to everything and everyone you touch and, again, you will rarely catch yourself thinking about yourself.

Become a Titan of outward focus, and you will see your confidence (and by extension, your Executive Presence) rise to new heights.

Next week, we talk about the next element of Intellectual Impact (which would seem to totally contradict outward focus!): be self-aware.

In Part 2 of this series, we covered the first element of Intellectual Impact: be well-read.

If you haven’t already done so, it would be best to start with Part 1.

Stay Current
Silence is often a good thing. Sometimes a well-placed ‘pregnant pause’ can serve to add a little drama, or even humor, to a lively conversation.

But, sometimes it can be pretty awkward — as in, the mysterious mid-conversation silence that most people try to fix by smiling and hoping someone else quickly thinks of something more to say.

What’s interesting about the awkward silence is that it can happen even with people with whom we may have been hitting it off, only seconds ago; your conversation is moving along at a nice, dynamic clip, you may even share a laugh — and out of nowhere — a missed beat. You may even sense that no one really wants the conversation to end, yet, there it goes, sputtering mercilessly to a halt, and sending all participants packing, reluctantly.

“The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the country…”

Having a few current events ‘on the draw’ can do a lot to save a good conversation from an early demise. Granted, not all conversations are worth saving — but it’s best to be prepared to rescue the ones that are.

In addition, referencing news and events that people may have heard about not only gives you an aura of awareness, as a leader, but also promotes a feeling of familiarity and comfort with you, as an individual. The resulting camaraderie encourages people to feel at ease — and, in turn, makes them more ‘open’ to you, and easier to converse with.

Set Up Google Reader
Google Reader is currently one of the most powerful tools available for staying in touch with current events. The magic of it lies in how profoundly simple it can make your web reading experience.

Once you get the hang of it, Google Reader almost totally wipes out any need for you to click all over the web to read your favorite news and info sites. It brings all of your chosen sites together, in one format; easy to navigate. Take a good look at Google Reader, and digest almost all of your information sources in a fraction of the time. The price is pretty good, too (free).

Learn to Use RSS Feeds
It is said that ‘the Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the country; the New York Times by the people who think they run the country; the Washington Post by the people who think they ought to run the country; the Boston Globe by the people who’s parents used to run the country (and did a far superior job of it, thank-you-veddy much)…’

Jokes aside, whichever paper you gravitate toward in your part of the world, leverage the power of the web by subscribing to the RSS feed of your newspaper’s website. Doing this will allow you to scan through all the interesting headlines in seconds, rather than minutes. As an example, you could find yourself going through the Journal, the Times, the Post and the Globe in less time it normally takes to read one paper.

Once you have a Google Reader account (mentioned above), subscribing to an RSS feed is as simple as clicking an RSS feed “Subscribe” button (like the large orange one that appears at the top-right of the page, here at WhataManKnows.com).

Some newspapers are (understandably) beginning to charge a fee for access to their articles online (WSJ, most notably; NYT is currently considering it). The technology is so convenient (and web news so ubiquitous) — the physical newspaper business is getting killed!

It’s simply easier and faster to stay current, online.

They Don’t Call it ‘Pop Culture’ For Nothing
Of course, there’s more to life than newspapers. Now that you’ve got a feed reader at your disposal, you can also more easily stay abreast of lighter fare (sports, entertainment, etc.) — also very useful in business social settings.

For United States dwellers, a few glances through ESPN, for example, as well as NPR’s Pop Culture segment, as well as a blog like Pop Culture Madness, and you’ll be up to speed on the general ‘goings-on’ in a matter of minutes — without having to sit through hours of bad television.

Finally, remember to keep it inoffensive; keep it relevant; and ‘change gears’ gently when introducing a topic. Work on smoothly folding current news and elements of pop culture into your banter, and you will find yourself having to end your conversations deliberately; like television, people won’t be able to get enough of you.

In Part 4, we talk about the next crucial element of Intellectual Impact: be outwardly-focused. Go to Part 4, here.

Intelligence is tricky.

Things that I felt absolutely sure of but a few years ago, I do not believe now. This thought makes me see more clearly how foolish it would be to expect all men to agree with me. — Jim Rohn

…more deceptively simple brilliance from one of the finest business philosophers of our time. The quote reminds me to relax, and not be so dogmatic about things I’m so “sure” about.

Scott Berkun (an actual smart person) once did a piece on just this subject, entitled, Why Smart People Defend Bad Ideas — and it’s awesome. When you have about 15 minutes, I recommend it (enthusiastically).

In Part 1 of this series, we talked about the two factors your self-confidence and Executive Presence depend upon:

Physical Impact (PI)

Intellectual Impact (II)

To understand Physical Impact, it would be best to start with Part 1.

II
Intellectual Impact is what happens once the conversation starts with an individual or a group of people you’ve just met. It has to do with the effect your words and behavior have upon others during your communication with them.

Remember, the idea is to cultivate an unmistakable aura of respect and trustworthiness that people can feel, almost immediately upon meeting you. This is Executive Presence.

To have maximum Intellectual Impact, you need to be:

well-read

current

outwardly focused

self-aware

generous

Let’s take a look at the first element.

Be Well-Read
When you’re meeting and talking with people in a business setting, it goes without saying that you need to ‘know your stuff.’ But knowledge of your chosen field of discipline isn’t always enough. We all know plenty of “well-read” guys who can speak ad nauseam on the most minute detail of our industries — but whom you wouldn’t follow onto a Hawaiian Tropic tour bus.

For the kind of Intellectual Impact that executive presence requires, your scope is going to need to be much wider than that of the average technician. A leader, in addition to superior industry knowledge, needs vision and imagination — something found in no richer abundance than in the pages of great literature.

Specifically, the works of the literary masters, such as Aristotle, Eliot, Dostoevsky, Dante, etc.

Refreshing yourself on works such as these can do wonders for your perspective on modern business problems — often by showing how unmodern life and business dilemmas often are (…for an example of this, take a look at Robert Louis Stevenson’s On the Choice of a Profession, written in 1916).

There’s no need to go around, loudly quoting Shakespeare…

Moreover, you might find that reading great literature expands your vision of your industry (and your role within that industry). From the staunch finance and trade ideologies of Dante, to Aristotle’s brilliant microeconomic observations, there are many contemporary parallels to be drawn, often validating (or challenging) your current business approach.

Your philosophically enhanced scope will display itself naturally in your conversation, and (you may find) will engender a sense of confidence in others, toward you.

Obviously, there’s no need to go around, loudly quoting Shakespeare to impress people you’ve just met. But, could the business implications of Shakespeare’s Henry V, for example, add some nuances to your leadership philosophy?

At the very least, this sort of high-octane idea intake can make you a more flexible, more interesting, and more engaging conversationalist — always a powerful executive asset.

As you begin to wrap your head around these mammoth manuscripts — maybe some you thought you’d never have to see again after college — remember the caliber of company you’re in… notably, T.S. Eliot, himself, who said:

“If you aren’t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?”

Check out ClassicReader.com, a great (and free) online resource for the classics, and a host of other excellent works.

In Part 3, we talk about the crucial element that follows being well-read: stay current. Go to Part 3, here.

You can tell a lot about a man by the way he orders his drink. What you order is not as important as how you order it.

As I’ve mentioned before, I know my way around a bar pretty well — but you certainly don’t need to be a veteran drink-slinger to get this right.

On occassion, I find myself at Jade or maybe Merc, sitting with a friend or business partner, enjoying the atmosphere, maybe a Jack Single Barrel and Coke — and keeping an eye open for the next little lesson life might teach.

Anyway, I find that, generally, when a man goes up to the bar to order a drink, he will often fall into one of two categories:

Bartender: Hello Sir, what can I get you…

Guy #1 (in a loud, clear voice): “Lag 16, neat.”

Bartender: Hello Sir, what can I get you…

Guy #2: “Ahhhhh… hmmmm… let me sseee…,” (squints to read top shelf bottles from 30 feet away) “uhh, is that… ahhmmm…” (at this point, the bartender has that look on his face — and even the guy’s date is starting to look uncomfortable) “you know what? Let me just have a Bud Light.”

*blink*

Hilarious (and sad).

There is, of course, nothing wrong with a Bud Light. What’s wrong, is a man who doesn’t know he wants a Bud Light.

Women get the “I’m-not-sure-what-I-want-to-drink” pass. Men don’t.

Why not?

Because one of the most valuable characteristics a man possesses, is decisiveness.

Even if you’re only out with friends, decisiveness is a good thing to practice. That way, you don’t have to be conscious of it when it counts most (e.g., business outings, high-profile events).

What’s Wrong With Taking Time to Study the Bar’s Selection?
There are, of course, no hard and fast rules on this — much in the same way there are no hard and fast rules about wearing a snuggie in public. (…or at all.)

There are ways to look sharp, and there are ways to look ridiculous.

The ‘sharp’ way is as follows:

Make a firm mental decision on the drink you are about to have, with the exact garnish you want (e.g., “Gin and Tonic, two limes”)*

Catch the bartender or cocktail server’s eye and make the call, clearly and confidently.

Every good bartender should be able to instantly offer you a substitution, should you request something he or she doesn’t carry.

A bartender who greets your drink call with, “we don’t have that,” followed by a blank stare, clearly indicates what kind of bartender he is; what kind of place you’re in (and what kind of tip you should leave!).

As the customer, all you should have to do is call your drink, and let the service begin. Relax your eyes — there’s no need to try and inventory the bottles on the shelves. Let the bartender worry about offering an alternative that pleases you (same goes for cocktail servers).

So next time you’re out, even casually, remember — be decisive. Pre-select your drink in your head before catching the bartender or waitress’ eye.

Take a bar veteran’s word: a good, firm drink call often makes a difference in the level of service you get that night — and maybe even when you return.

*Bonus: always call the alcohol first, then the mixer (i.e., never order a “cranberry juice and vodka”; order a “vodka, cranberry.” More drink ordering details here.)

I’m hoping you’re already familiar with Seth Godin; in my opinion, one of the most brilliant communicators on the Web.

I’m reading through his latest ebook, and let me just say — I’m not even finished with the thing yet, and here I am recommending it to you.

It’s that good.

“Everything I know about business, I learned from poker…”

What Matters Now amounts to a rich collection of bite-sized ‘thought grenades’ from a body of well-respected people, each of whom have contributed a paragraph, a page, a picture, a diagram, or some other element, to complete the book.

In Seth’s own words:

“Here are more than seventy big thinkers, each sharing an idea for you to think about as we head into the new year…

Here’s the deal: it’s free.”

My favorite excerpt so far? Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh who, after opening with, “Business is a game. Everything I know about business, I learned from poker…,” writes:

The guy who wins the most hands is not the guy who makes the most money in the long run.

The guy who never loses a hand is not the guy who makes the most money in the long run.

Go for positive expected value, not what’s least risky.

You will win or lose individual hands, but it’s what happens in the long term that matters.

Hope you like it, too. You can get it here: What Matters Now.

Recently, we received some feedback from a reader who, after saying some really nice things about the site (thank you, Jason), ended his message with the following question:

“What can I read, listen to, or watch that can help me learn the skills necessary to exude confidence and a sense of presence? Thanks, Jason H.”

The question is excellent, particularly because the reader understands that most anything we lack can be acquired.

It’s surprising how many men look upon life as a series of lotteries that you either win, or don’t. Far too many individuals with incredible hidden gifts limit themselves over one or two ‘missing ingredients’ that have not yet magically appeared in their lives. (Bravo to you, Jason, for knowing better.)

“We,” also includes — you.

The second thing that’s great about Jason’s question is that he’s clearly prepared to take action. He’s ready to “read, listen to, or watch” what he needs to, then follow through with solid effort to improve.

I’ll bet that if you weren’t similar to Jason in this regard, you wouldn’t be reading this right now — so, a Bravo is in order for you, too.

Trading Ideas
One of the things we’re about here at WhataManKnows.com is, not so much providing advice, but, trading ideas — revealing concepts that we’ve found to be most useful in our own lives (…when I say “we,” I include the consortium of well-placed, highly-experienced men I consult with on these issues, hailing from a variety of business disciplines and industries).

“We,” also includes — you. Some of the best ideas communicated here come from readers like you (often, we simply distill it, clarify it and pass it along). So if you have any valuable thoughts you don’t mind sharing — send us some feedback, so we can all learn from each other. Deal?

Alright, let’s get after it!

Unlocking Your Natural Self-Confidence in Business Settings
“Executive Presence” — an unmistakable aura of respect and trustworthiness that people can feel, almost immediately upon meeting you.

Possessing an executive presence doesn’t mean you’re never nervous. It doesn’t mean you won’t make the occasional mistake. It simply refers to the distinct and immediate impression people get that you are a man to be listened to; followed; trusted.

…you don’t have to be a literal “executive” to exude executive presence.

If you’re a man who already has no problem commanding the respect of people who get to know you over time, an executive presence will take you even further — because it cuts the time needed for new acquaintances to form the proper impression of you.

The word executive stems from the Latin word effectus, literally translated, “doing,” “execution,” “performance,” “effect,” or, “result.” Clearly, the sense of an executive is that of an “effective” person — a performer. Someone who gets “results.”

But, something interesting happens when you add the word “presence.” It comes from the word praesentio, literally, “to feel beforehand.”

So, the core idea is that people should be able to “feel beforehand” — before even getting to know you — that you are a powerful man.

Jason, our reader above, happens to already be a very powerful man — but, you don’t have to be a literal “executive” to exude executive presence. It’s something that every man can (and should) work to acquire, then refine.

PI + II = EP²
Executive Presence (EP) boils down to two factors:

your Physical Impact (PI)

your Intellectual Impact (II)

PI
To have maximum physical impact you need to be:

energetic

physically fit

well-dressed

well-groomed

Of the two factors, PI is probably ignored most often. As busy professionals, it can sometimes be easy for us to brush off how we look as a non-essential, superficial concern. But, thoughtful management of your image is extremely important.

Like it or not, people will always find it tough to get behind a tired, overweight, out of shape and sloppy guy in mediocre clothing. Granted, if you’re on this site, you probably have most of these elements in order. But it’s the man with all of these cylinders firing that sets himself apart from the crowd, and renders himself tough to resist as a leader.

Your PI is exceedingly powerful — because everything about it happens before you ever open your mouth.

To totally control your physical impact, I would highly recommend our own 10 Things Every Man Should Do, Every Day download. This guide for the successful man completely (and quickly) covers every single aspect of your PI — and it’s free (at the moment).

In Part 2, we dive into the first of 5 crucial elements that determine your Intellectual Impact upon people you’ve just met. Go to Part 2, here.

Well, here we are at the top of the slope. What kind of year are you in for? What will a snapshot of your life look like 365 days from now?

The answers to those questons, as you know, depend largely upon what you put in motion today. But before we get to the goals, let’s address the big problem.

The Big Problem:

Most resolutions last about _______. (…feel free to fill in the blank.)

Maybe you’re one of the rare ones who actually ace every resolution, every year.

But for most of us, the post-holiday routine returns and pulls us ever so gently back toward last years orbit. Before we know it, we’ve reengaged old habits, dropped the nice new ones, and have become far too comfortable to break free.

Not this year.

This is a year for breakthroughs, and you can make them happen with the following 3 tips:

Take a Snapshot. Take a mental snapshot of your ‘future self’ with the exact results you want, and ‘laser’ it onto your brain. You do this by visualizing that snapshot as many times a day as you can.

Make sure your goals are yours. In other words, don’t adopt a single goal from anyone else’s list (including the one below!) without first identifying some solid personal reasons why you need it. The results you’re reaching for must excite you.

Avoid vague goals, like:

“Spend More Time With Family”

“Enjoy Life More”

Goals like those are noble but are, at best, difficult to track — and at worst, a waste of ink.

Instead, strike down to specifics:

“Spend More Time With Family” becomes: “Family Night Once a Week, No Exceptions”

“Enjoy Life More” becomes: “New Adventure Once a Month, (e.g., paintballing, performance driving school…).”

Keep it trackable, specific and exciting. Most of all, constantly visualize the results you’re going to gain.

—

Here are the Top 8 Resolutions we’re recommending for you at WhataManKnows:

1. Benchpress 1.5 Times Your Weight.
A little more clear-cut than a fuzzy “Get in Shape” resolution, no? In fact, there are 10 minimum levels a man should reach* before he goes around calling himself “fit.” If you’re not there yet, can you imagine how you’ll look, once you are?

Mental Snapshot Idea: You, pictured at your favorite place in the world, with your favorite people in the world, in the best shape you’ve ever been in.

*Check with your doctor first!

2. Own a Business.
Warning. Highly-opinionated (but completely correct) declaration ahead:

Leading an extraordinary life requires maximum control of your time. A job just won’t cut it, no matter the paycheck.

Time is not money. Time is life. Take full control of your life this year. If you don’t own a business, it’s time to fix that.

Mental Snapshot Idea: The look on your face, at the precise moment you check your accounts and discover that you no longer need your day job.

3. Develop Your Best Talent.
(…you know, the one you’ve been putting off: playing guitar*, customizing choppers, playing tournament-level pool…).

Talent unused is a waste; unshared, a tragedy.

Don’t be selfish. If you’re good at something… really good at something, take what you’ve got and develop it to within an inch of its life.

Do you know how many people, these days, could use a little extra joy in their lives from experiencing whatever talent you possess? Reveal it. It’s one of the reasons you’re here.

Mental Snapshot Idea: You with a happy and amazed crowd, truly enjoying the anomaly that is you.

*real guitar, not Hero!

4. Learn Public Speaking.
You’ve heard the stats: public speaking has been found to be the #1 fear of most people, followed by #2: death, and #3: spiders.

…and what does a man do with an irrational fear?

Run right at it, of course!

Staring directly into the abyss of public speech on a regular basis is one of the most valuable things you will ever do for your social skills and business life.

Join a local speakers association* (e.g., Toastmasters), and watch how much easier all other communication becomes for you.

Mental Snapshot Idea: You, well-dressed, comfortable and confident, engaging a group of people who respect you.

*acting or improv-comedy classes are great for this, too.

5. Nail Down Your Daily Routine
Core daily habits seperate the good from the great. Lay the foundation for an extaordinary year with the WhataManKnows 10 Things Every Man Should Do, Every Day guide. It’s free (at the moment).

Mental Snapshot Idea: You, conducting your daily business with the poise and self-assurance that comes from knowing you’re thoroughly prepared and on top of your game, whatever that game may be.

6. Get Away From Home 3 Times This Year
If you already like to travel, this resolution isn’t for you (you may easily best this goal by a factor of 10 this year).

No, this one is for those of us for whom travel does not carry a natural appeal.

Why should you bother? Because there’s just no education quite like it. Saint Augustine said it best:

The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.

Mental Snapshot Idea: A wiser you, in a far away place, acknowledging the camera with a winning smile and an amazing woman hugging your neck.

7. Volunteer ______ Times This Year
People often think of it as charity. As it turns out, volunteerism is usually more of an exchange, the volunteers often benefiting most of all. Lock in a solid number of outings for yourself this year, then follow through.

Mental Snapshot Idea: You, in a group photo of participants, having fun and feeling great about the difference you’re making.

8. Cut Down Overused Expressions.
Some common violations: “umm,” “uhh,” “you know,” “like,” “whatever,” “just sayin…’”

Mental Snapshot Idea: Me, putting away the gun I was about to shoot myself with had I heard just one more “whatevs” *ahem* ok: You, now a member of parliament, addressing the chamber with the eloquent, whiskerless words for which you’ve become renowned throughout the lannnd…

…maybe a tiny bit dramatic there, but you understand the point: make your goals specific and exciting to you — and keep them alive with mental photos.

Stay consistent this year, and chase down the results you want like a vicious hound.

Get Up!
Finally, always get back on the horse. Understand that there may be moments this year when you look up and realize it’s been two months since you made the weekly call to your Nana (or some other resolution you’ve slacked on).

Don’t give up! Get up… whistle for that mare (the horse, not Nana!), and hop back in the saddle!

In all seriousness… make this year an extraordinary, landmark year. Make today a turning point that you’ll look back on and say, ‘that’s when it ‘clicked’ — that’s when it all came together for me.’
